Buku ini menggugurkan narasi militer yang menjadi propaganda resmi pemerintah Indonesia tentang pembunuhan massal 1965– 1966 berdasar arsip militer sendiri. Arsip setebal 3.000 halaman yang ditemukan di bekas gedung Badan Intelijen Indonesia di Banda Aceh tersebut untuk pertama kalinya digunakan untuk merekonstruksi secara rinci narasi pembunuhan 1965–1966. Dari perintah dan catatan militer, serta kisah-kisah yang belum pernah didengar yang disuarakan 70 penyintas G30S di Aceh, buku ini dengan gamblang menyatakan bahwa pembantaian 1965–1966 merupakan kasus genosida, sebagaimana definisi yang termaktub dalam Konvensi Genosida 1948. “Secara mengejutkan, Melvin berhasil menjelaskan dua hal yang, setidaknya bagi saya, hanya samar-samar diketahui. Tahun 2008, Melvin memulai penelitiannya dengan mewawancarai para penyintas dan pelaku kekerasan peristiwa 1965-66 tentang pengalaman mereka. Ia juga mencoba datang ke bagian Arsip Negara di Banda Aceh. Melvin sempat pesimistis bisa mendapatkan dokumen yang ia butuhkan, namun ternyata ia justru mendapat banyak sekali dokumen berkaitan dengan peristiwa 1965 di Aceh. “Saya hampir tidak dapat mempercayai nasib baik ketika saya diberi kotak penuh dokumen-dokumen militer internal yang mencatat secara detail bagaimana militer telah memerintahkan dan mengatur pembunuhan,” ujarnya.
